Aylin Atla is one of the most-cited Turkish scientists in the world. With over 1,000 publications, she has contributed to various fields of research, including organic chemistry, biochemistry, polymer science and engineering. Her work focuses on developing new materials with environmentally friendly properties. Atla also served as a professor at Middle East Technical University's Department of Chemical Engineering for 27 years before retiring in 2012.Atla was born on May 11th 1966 in Ankara to an engineer father and a teacher mother who encouraged her to pursue science at an early age. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Middle East Technical University (METU) in chemical engineering, where she studied under Professor Recep Bozkurt. After graduation, Atla worked at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany for three years. She then went to MIT in Boston, United States, where she pursued her graduate studies in organic chemistry under Professor Charles Lieber at Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. After completing her Master's degree in 1992, Atla returned to Erdoğan University and started working as a lecturer and assistant professor at the department of chemical engineering. She became a full professor in 2002 and ended her scientific career there on July 1st 2012. Atla is one of the most-cited Turkish scientists in the world. In 2010, Erdoğan University honored Atla with the "Distinguished Science Teacher" award (given to professors for their outstanding teaching and research achievements). She was also awarded the METU Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998 and the Science and Engineering Faculty Award in 2003. In 2012 she was nominated to receive an honorary doctorate from Bogazici University. Atla is married and lives with her husband in Ankara. They have three children and four grandchildren.
